English Department Grading Guidelines
As per the department meeting 6/20, here are the weighted categories for 9, 10 and 11th grade:
Homework/classwork/participation - 20%
Quizzes - 30 %
Writing, Tests, Projects - 50%
Throughout each marking period, there are opportunities for various graded assignments:
multiple choice - close reading, journal writing, blogging, essay writing, quick writing.
The Research Project: Quarter 3 for grades 9 and 10, Quarter 2 for grade 11
This quarter will predominantly consist of grades pertaining to the research process: proposal, annotated bibliography (research notebook), outline, rough draft, final draft, project.
Late Assignments:
Absence is not an excuse for a missing or late assignment. In the age of technology, the expectation is that work is submitted electronically (via the google classroom or email) in the event that a student cannot be present in class. **If the student has no internet access/electronic device, pre arrangements must be made with the teacher.
Writing assignments (final drafts), projects, or long term assignments:
10 points off every day an assignment is late. After five days (including weekends) the late assignment, project or presentation will NOT be accepted and you will receive a 0.
Homework:
Due to the varied nature of homework assignments throughout the course of a year, the penalties for late work will reflect the expectations of the assignment.
Typically, homework assignments to be reviewed the next day in class will receive a penalty of 0 if not turned in on time.
Quiz and test make-up:
It is the student’s responsibility to make up quizzes and tests within five days of returning to class. Work not made up in the allotted time will result in a 0.
To foster independence and encourage student ownership, the procedure for a student who is unsure about a grade is as follows: 1. Schedule a student meeting with the teacher(most grade questions can be resolved at this step) 2. If the grade in question is unresolved after the student-teacher meeting, please feel free to email the teacher or schedule a parent-teacher meeting.
English Department Cell Phone Classroom Policy and Procedures
As everyone knows, cell phones and earbuds/head phones cause distractions. To support the endeavors of our high school administration, our colleagues throughout the building, and most importantly, the high quality of academic instruction here at CCHS, cell phone use will be strictly prohibited during instruction/class time by the English Department. Please note that this policy will be enforced within each of the English classrooms grades 9-12.
Procedure:
Upon entering the classroom, the student is required to place his/her cell phone and earbuds in their designated pocket holder, or off and away in their bookbag/purse-- NOT in their pocket/on their person. Headphones/earbuds must also be put away with the phone. Students may NOT take their phones to the bathroom or to get water.
Consequence:
Should the student be caught violating the classroom guidelines for cell phone use, the following protocol will follow:
1st offense- Student will be warned only once. The phone must be put away.
2nd offense- Teacher detention. Additionally, parents/guardians will be contacted. Failure to serve detention will result in a referral.
3rd offense and beyond- The student will receive an office referral.
**Refusal to put the phone away will automatically result in the 3rd offense.**
