• Physical Education Classroom Expectations

    In Person

    The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of physical activity. To fulfill a lifetime of physical activity, a physically literate individual:

    • Has learned the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities;

    • Knows the implications and the benefits of involvement in various types of activities;

    • Participates in regular physical activity;

    • Is physically fit;

    • Values physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle.

    The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic does not change the goal of physical education; however, there are considerations that apply in implementing programming. This document is an effort to identify those considerations that are apparent to date based on our reopening plan.

    Because the COVID-19 situation is fluid, it’s important to keep in mind that this is a living document and will be updated as we learn more about how to successfully serve our students through physical education programs.

    Use of Equipment: Sometimes the gym may be set up for activities of the day. Students are cautioned not to use physical education equipment without permission and proper supervision from his/her instructor. In others words, just because the equipment is out, doesn’t mean you can touch it!

    Staff Offices/Equipment Room: These offices are for the use of the professional staff. No one is to enter or use the offices without permission. Even if the door is open!!!

    Student Expectations:  Students will be punctual, dressed properly, demonstrate a positive attitude, exert an acceptable effort and follow all rules and classroom procedures.  Inappropriate language will not be tolerated.

    Locker room and Dressing: 1. Students should come to school prepared/dressed to participate.

    2.  Locker rooms will be closed and off limits.  3. Students will hand sanitize upon entering and leaving the PE space being used. 4. 12’ spacing while in the gymnasiums or weight room whenever possible.

    5. Masks must be worn.  6. Students will enter the gym, sanitize hands, store book bags/belongings and report to “floor spots”.  7. If you are not present when roll call is taken, you are late. Do not loiter in the hall. Everyone is expected to be dressed appropriately for activity each day!! 8. If it is not your scheduled physical education period, you may not use the gym or equipment. 9. You are responsible for safeguarding your personal belongings in the designated area. 10.  Food/gum is not permitted in the physical education class. 11. Any student leaving the physical education area before the bell will be considered to be cutting class.

    Attendance:

    1. Excused absences- If you are not in class for any reason, you are absent.  Grades are affected by absences! Because class time is limited, you must communicate with your teacher if you miss any “in person” classes.  Your teacher will then provide you with the appropriate assignment to make up the class.

    2.  Unexcused absences- Absences that are unexcused or students who do not participate will receive a “0” for that class.

    Excuses from Physical Education: Make up procedures 1. To be excused from participation in physical education for a medical reason either for one class meeting or for a longer period the student must receive a note from home and/or a physician and present it to the school nurse before his/her scheduled PE class period. The nurse will then write a pass to be presented to the PE teacher. Verbal excuses by the student to the instructor will not be accepted. The only acceptable medical excuse is a written one from the school nurse. If a student has a medical problem which limits participation in some activities, the note from the doctor should explain that. For example: if a student has an upper body injury, he/she can work in the weight room on the lower body. 2.  Student will be expected to complete written medical assignments for the time they are not allowed to participate. 3. Students will not be excused from physical education class to make up work or take tests in another subject area.

    Physical Education Attire: All students are expected to arrive with acceptable physical education clothing for safe class activity. MASKS ARE TO BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.

    Examples of acceptable attire for PE.

    1. Athletic Shoes that tie.

    2. T-shirt (sleeves) with no buttons, zippers, or collars. Clothing with inappropriate language, graphics, or advertisements is NOT acceptable. Shirts which have inappropriate designs and logos are not acceptable.  Under garments should not be showing. All t-shirts must be long enough not to show midriff when arms are raised. Hair ties are not to be used on clothing. No muscle shirts are allowed.  No hats or hoods. No see through material.

    3. Athletic shorts are acceptable at a length that reaches to the end of the palm (where the palm meets the fingers) when the shoulders down. Cut-offs or any type of shorts with belt loops are not acceptable. Under garments should not be showing.

    4. Warm-up suits/sweat suits, may be worn over the regular physical education uniform when the temperature and/or activity dictates. These articles of clothing should be worn in addition to your regular uniform – not in place of.

    5. Both for safety and security, students who wear jewelry to school (earrings that dangle or other loose jewelry) should remove jewelry before class so that nothing is lost or broken as they play.

    6. Only headgear that is religious in nature will be allowed.

    All dress code issues are subject to approval by the PE teacher!
